8 9 then done. Thanks for the great term!

Chapter 8 - Design today! Things have changed. I was tweeting with Brair about this earlier tonight about how you cant do everything and how it use to be about cutting, gluing, setting type etc was a designer now its about pixels and etc. But to be a good designer you need to have your feet in everything, coders need to be able to have some knowledge of the design process, designers need to know some code, designers need to know how to talk to a printer etc its all interconnected. So you cant just be a print designer or a designer for print but you need to be a designer. With the digital fast approaching and killing all the print world we need to grasp on and hold true to that old skool to make life what we can! And also make sure your keeping up on whats going on now, 5 minutes from now, 5 years from now, 50 yeasr from now. Design changes in a few seconds keep your network large vast and locked in the end you will get that cake!

Chapter 9 - What is creativity? Huh? You mean how do you mesure it or what is it? Its hard to explain but the author does a great job of doing it. risk+ discomfort +sweat(+or- inspiration)= creativity. Which is true. You have to take a certain risk to put yourself out there and put yourself in a position to not be confortable and then put a lot of sweat, blood and tears into it all to make sure your doing what your doing to make the best that you can. Go big or go home right? If your not putting yourself out there your failing and I know I have yet to put myself out there as much as I should. The other part of this chapter about the brief is awesome. I have falling in love with the brief I need to get one / do one for every project. They make shit so much more clear and give the client an idea of what they are paying for. I want to learn to write a better one / speak generally better english / spell better too. (Why are designers not given a copy writer after the sophomore review? seriously we need this! HA!) Ha! Slice of the cake…

This Term - This term was a hard one I learned a lot like not to take two design classes + an internship on + 3 mentees + freelancing work + personal drama etc so in the end I hope I survived this but who knows if I need to re-take it I will I will probably re do all my projects again and make them better since thats all I want is to be better. Thanks for the term hopefully me writting all these a day after the finals is still going to count if not then I tried. Thats all I can ask for. Have a good summer

Heyo 5 6 7 coming at ya! Loosing your soul!

Chapter 5 - the studio. I am down with doing a studio, cuz I would be down to work with my friends that produce amazing stuff and then hire an accountant + some muscle to get the bills paid. Going it alone is never a good idea for me personally…

Chapter 6 - Getting your name out and promoting. Agagin with the fat kid and his cake its all about the network but then having a solid piece of marketing matieral to promote yourself is going to get you noticed. I have seen some awesome peices of self marketing lately maybe due to all the GD’ers getting ready to gradumakate but yeah if you can get your self in front of someone other then just flippin your book and being like hum but actually interacting with someone for 3-4 minutes then your golden. What can this be? PSH anything really you can do a poster, a sticker, a cross word etc whatever you can do to make the person your sending this into know who the hell you are and what your about. But then again if your a fat kid and your hungry and your looking to get your cake then you hustle and you hustle hard! In the end both will give you a successful future!

Chapter 7. CLIENTS! Cant live with them cant live without them. One of my favorite new songs a friend sent to me from another GD program had a line that says “GOD IS GOOD BEER IS GREAT AND PEOPLE ARE CRAZY” this is true about clients. They are all banans. Can you put this glittery shit in the zerox machine so I can just get 10 cards vs paying for 1000 when in the end the 1000 will be cheaper. A good client can be the best thing in the world to work with you get them they get you this is why I like working for my father on project since he works internet security and knows the some of the strssors I deal with he gives me a project and knows I will get it done but a bad client which I have had more then enough of them may not understand and think that all your doing is clicking the mouse pushing pixels but they just dont understand. David Airey just posted something about how people are staring to say “I do design on the side” and then a responce to that was “Yeah I design during the week but moonlight as a plumber at night…” or something like that. I would have to find it again but this goes back to chapter 1 about communciation thats the key. But also knowing what you want your role to be too freelance, studio, pion, creative director, learder of the world whatever the case is you need to know that client are special but you need them to make your coin for that cake.

236 Pickup sticks! Time for Response to Chpt. 2 4 6 on Losing your soul!

Chpt2: Too Legit to Quit! This is the chapter about being a professional in the design world and I guess starting out my blog post on Chapter 2 with Too legit to Quit is not going to help matter but none the less this was an awesome chapter. I like that the author took a different take on the way designers work with referencing a tailor… Research is the key to any good designer. Without it you 1. dont know whats out there. 2 are missing the mark on what it could be. I know that I LOVE research but I dont do enough when I am desiging. Not sure why but may be due to how many projects / classes we are doing at a time / not getting a personal connection to the project / a “FUCK YES” feeling about it. I have had that feeling twice in the design program and its shown atleast I think so. 1. Being 321 Livengoods Pathos Ethos Logos project I will remember that project for the rest of my life! It was sooo much fun to work on and do and I pushed myself as hard as I could. I could have made it better but fuck I turned in a 2 inch process book and used it for the portfolio review and must have had some kind of inpact since I got in. And the 2 is Kate’s 320 timeline project. I LOVE that project like LOVE and have gotten so many good compliments on it and yeah it was crazy, to map out how much music I listened to for a week then recategorize it by release year yeah nuts! But the end results on both were awesome. So research / being amped on your projects and sprinkling in some time managment and you can make some magic happen! But not all the projects will be that way so you need to figure out how to get amped on everything which is something I am fighting with. Designers can pick and choose if they want to eat.

Chapt 3. FAT KID LOVES CAKE THEREFORE NEEDS MONEY! = Networking. If you want to be anything in this world then you need pimp yourself out like a fat kid that just wants some dam cake! What does this mean? Talk to anyone and everyeone tweet, facebook, flickr, linkedin, driblle, connect, network, busienss cards, whatever you can do to get in the face of the people hiring. Dont be afraid get at it! If you fail! THEN FAIL HARDER life is all about the network seriously the saying its not about what you can do but who you know is the most truthful statment that I have ever heard! Your work can be sick but if you sit in the corner waiting for someoen to say hey then your going to be int hat corner but if you work is good and your all over the place talking to the Art Director of Target via twitter and getting your face and name out there by taking thte steps necessary then your going to get where you want to be. So be a fat kid and whore yourself out for some dam cake! Cuz thast really the goal for us as designers right? To have our cake and eat it too? So get at it! Go GO Go GO Network!!

Chapter 4. UGH freelancing… pass. Been there done that got the t-shirt not for me. Client are DUMB and when you have to mix in the whole you got to pay me for this thing that I spent 45 hours on but you think I did it in 2 and in ms paint and dont understand why its costing you 3000 dollars well thats annoying and gets old. More power to people that freelance full time and I know designers all moon light and work on other things and I am down with this but to do the whole 9-5 freelance thing yeah not for me. I would rather punch in and punch out produce sick work and have stable income then have to deal with another client that docent pay their bills. I ran a LLC for 5 years doing print brokrage and design and probably one of the toughest things to make end meet at the end of the day.

Chapter 1. Designer without Soul snatched!

When I read the intro to the Designer without a Soul I got super stoked since I have owned this book for years! But then crap went wonky with school and again reading went to the waste side but I got back on it today! Better late then never right? In the intro the author (Adrian Shaughnessy < Thought people got my name messed up gez!) writes about communication and how designers communicate with each other (designer to designer) and how designers talk to clients. I think this was a good chapter to start with since communication is at the core of graphic design and if you cant communicate then your going to fail before you get to the start gate. Not in communicate in making killer designs cuz any shut in with a fair knowledge of design software and the basis skill sets you learn in lower division classes can do design. I am talking about how to communicate with your client on their level / the give and take of working with a client as well. I have worked freelance, interned, worked in a print shop and run an offset press I have run the gamaut of clients and creative alike. Ands its all about being able to communicate with them on their own level. You dont start whipping out kerning and leading and that kind of stuff with a client they dont understand but you also need to know how to understand what they are saying to you my internship is a interactive intense firm and they kept telling me to change the padding on something or try an H3 tag etc when I was working on print stuff. At first I just laughed didnt say anything to them since I knew what they were saying. One of my favorite things to tell people is Communciation is everything without it you will die. So learn to speak and speak often it docent matter if it always makes sense just do it. And network! Network like a fat kid that needs money to get some cake cuz without a solid network your going to be screwed.Thats not in the chapter but its true! Fat Kid Needs Money for Cake = Networking! And trust me I am a fat kid and I know the hussel to get some dam cake!

THESIS MODIFICATION!

So I woke up this morning and had a thought to modify my thesis, I took on too much this term and I know it! But I am still doing branding and all that goes with it BUT not doing the actual branding of each business. I think I am going to do a “So you want to be a logo designer” boot camp kit.

Deliverables:
1. Book: History of Branding
              Branding Types
Brand Trends (last 5 years if I can get them)
              Popular Branding Professional (Rand, Scher,etc.)
              Branding Firms
              Gallery of Good Marks

2. Membership card / ID Badge (possible laminated lanyard with a photo)

3. Sketch book (Scout book size / bigger) maybe a few one with just white, lined and gridded

4. “Design Supplies” Pen, Pencil, Tracing Paper, Ruler etc.

5. Apparel? Maybe? Stages of Development? « Still working on this concept. Something along these lines tho.

6. Website Mockup / Place to get resources / Inspirational Sites etc…

7. Graduation Diploma

8. Creative Brief / project 1: Housed is 5 creative briefs for the original business. (Pressed Artisan Sandwiches, Brew23, BlueDuck Publishing, Church Records, Sano Hospital)

GOALS:
Monday > I am going to work on the book all day today and HOPEFULLY get it done. I have all the resources checked from my original concept, but I wasn’t working on it that much since I was stuck in the logo world. I think its also been hard to do logos since I have 3 logos for my internship and 2 personal / freelanced based logo projects. AND the creative brief / the mark for the overal kit. (note all will be housed in a box, that you purchase at the start.)
Wednesday > The PRESENTATION: Will have the book printed in entirety (maybe in bw mostly with some color spreads printed), actual slides for the presentation and one or two of the deliverables.
YUP. Got to get to work now. Laters.
